When global attention meets local reality
- Place branding and destination development in Greenland

Linda KleistHead of Destination Development at Visit Greenland

In recent years, Greenland has moved into the global spotlight. International media, geopolitical discussions, and growing interest in Arctic destinations have brought unprecedented visibility to the world’s largest island.

Greenland became global headlines almost overnight. When that happens, a new challenge emerges: how does a place hold on to its identity when the whole world suddenly turns its attention there?

- How does a place stay true to its identity when the world suddenly looks its way?

For those working on the ground, this attention brings both opportunity and complexity.

In this session, Linda shares how increased global visibility has affected everyday life in Greenland, and how it has influenced the strategic work of destination development and place branding.

Kalaallit Nunaat is the Greenlandic name for Greenland. In direct meaning, it refers to the land of the people. Drawing on her close collaboration with communities across the country, Linda will explore:

  • How increased visibility is experienced in small communities – from practical changes to social dynamics and the emotional reality of suddenly being in the spotlight.

  • How expectations grow alongside attention – from visitors, media, partners and sometimes within local communities themselves.

  • How this shift has influenced the work of Visit Greenland – from communication priorities and reputation management to stakeholder coordination and capacity considerations.

  • How Greenland approaches place branding strategically, building narratives rooted in local values and ensuring that tourism supports responsible, long-term development.

  • What other places can learn when attention grows faster than structures, resources or readiness.

Why is this relevant to you?
This session offers a rare inside perspective on how a place navigates a sudden focus, risk and crisis situation with global interest while staying grounded in its own identity, culture and communities.
